Common Weal Edinburgh North & Leith

Two months on from the referendum, the first community-led “Common” is now open in Leith! Hosted by Area C Coffee House on Leith Walk in Edinburgh, The Common will provide a cafe space for evening events, talks and political debate outwith Area C’s normal business hours. The Common is the first of what is hoped to be a number of similar ventures across Scotland, connected to the politics of the Common Weal.

Common Weal is an emerging movement which is developing a vision for economic and social development in Scotland. It brings together ideas for changing Scotland from across the political divide and has played a key role in the independence debate. The Commons will give a physical space for people of all parties and none and from all sides of the independence debate to learn, discuss and debate those ideas.

The opening night includes short talks from peace activist Isobel Lindsay and Common Weal director Robin McAlpine. Entertainment comes courtesy of Wise L Leathermonk, Gavin & Anna, Wounded Knee and Carrie On Dancing.

The Common is a not-for-profit venture kick started by a small group of community activists who formed Common Weal Edinburgh North & Leith (ENL). A public meeting on Sunday 30th November will help guide how Common Weal ENL is organised. For more information on Common Weal ENL and our upcoming events, please see:

Early in September Women in Black shared the bit of pavement opposite the Balmoral with a wondrous mixture of Yes campaigners, one of whom, a RIC badge wearer inspired, like me, by Common Weal, said the movement would go on and there’d be a cafe in Leith – He was right!
Well done to all who helped fund it and who will go on making things happen at ‘Common’.
