Siobhan Wilson’s epic August Playlist

Francophile singer-songwriter Siobhan Wilson chooses the music for Bella this week, following her triumph at the Green Man Rising finals in London. There Are No Saints, the excellent recent LP from the Glasgow-based multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter, was recently featured as Album Of The Day on BBC Radio 6 Music.

Yann Tiersen – Comptine d’un autre été, l’après-midi
Using the natural minor to make a soundtrack that sounds contemporary and Parisien.

Miossec – Les Chiens de Paille
What do we dedicate our lives to? Who do we give it to?
I used to listen to this when walking to work in a music shop where I used to sell plectrums. I hated it!

Jacques Brel – La Chanson de Vieux Amants
This song is an old friend. The trumpet part is a bijou.

Barbara – Dis, Quand Revindra-Tu?
Barbara is one of a kind, so unique. Her fans adored her. Her voice sounds a bit like a bird but has this courage and fragility. There’s an anger in the song and maturity that captivated me from the first time I heard it.

Frances Gall – Laisse Tomber Les Filles
Willy Mason played this as I was walking on stage to do my support act. It’s a middle finger song!

Francis – Coeur de Pirate
She has such a cute voice and she sounds like she might have listened to as much Regina Spektor as I did at one time.

Gonzales – Rideaux Luniares
I think Gonzales is actually Canadian, but he’s an artist I discovered in France and I know he’s worked with a lot of French artists. He is a hero of mine.

Leo Ferre – Avec Le Temps
The best song about ageing and death there ever was.

George Delerue – Le Tourbillon
I love acoustic recordings. I think this is taken from a film.

Michel Fugain – Fais Comme L’Oiseau
This song has the best music video I have ever seen in my life.

Captain Kidd – +/-
I discovered him on CQFD when I was about 19 and have been a fan ever since. Saw him play a live Sofar gig once which was incredible.

Charles Trenet – Boum!
I love how this sounds like a children’s song but it super heavy. This song always reminds me how magical France is and the French language is so funny.

Siobhan Wilson plays Aberdeen’s Blue Lamp on September 8, Elgin’s Drouthy Cobbler on September 9, Edinburgh’s Voodoo Rooms on September 24 and Stirling Tolbooth on September 26.
