Dear X

I am writing to you in solidarity and to let you know that I and many others across Scotland are thinking about you and are doing what we can to challenge your imprisonment.

The Catalan Defence Committee Scotland, which was formed in October, is coordinating activities across the country. It is raising awareness of your plight, and putting pressure on the UK Government and the European Union to condemn the Spanish state’s use of violence against Catalunyans and the suspension of Catalan autonomy.

I want to see you and other political prisoners released. I believe in the right of Catalunyans to decide their own future in free and fair elections. And I will do what I can to raise awareness of your personal situation, and of the ongoing need to defend freedom of speech, freedom of assembly and human rights in Catalunya and elsewhere.

In solidarity,

Benvolugut/uda:

Us vull a tu i als altres presos posats en llibertat.

  1. Chris Clark says:

Please could you supply a draft text, with a translation into Catalan, by which we can express solidarity and support. Many thanks.

    1. Rob says:

I agree with a text into Catalan. Thanks

    2. Okay, we’re preparing that

  2. Jamsie says:

    Naw!
They knew what they were doing was illegal and in breach of the constitution.
Our political leaders are the people who set the laws and standards we all have to live by and they should live by the same as we are expected to.
The right to self determination is not in the hands of a political class to confer rather it is something which should be determined when a clear majority of the electorate has demanded it and once that has been established and mandated the electorate should be allowed to vote upon.
One man (or woman) one vote and the majority carries.
    Nothing less should be acceptable.

    1. Redguantlet says:

What should never be acceptable is putting people in prison – at my expense!!! – for fck all more than playing the fool…

Spain? The Inquisition lasted four centuries, friends. They have form, eh?

    2. Travelady says:

Listen to yourself. In your wee world such people like Gandhi, Mandela, Martin Luther King Jr, Rosa Parks, the Suffrogettes & even Glasgow’s own Mary Barbour should have sat on their backsides and not fought for their cause since their respective Govs ignored them.

    3. Andy Borland says:

The referendum was a manifesto commitment upon which the Catalan electorate passed their judgement in elections and endorsed.

The ‘political class’, therefore, were mandated by the sovereign will of the Catalan people who voted them into power.

      QED.

      The bastards.

      1. Dont confuse the discussion with facts Andy

    4. Malcolm Kerr says:

If “the constitution” requires beating elderly women in the street, who are simply exercising a right to vote, and if it requires imprisoning your political opponents, then it’s wrong and should be challenged. We should salute these brave democrats.

    5. DC says:

So what do you do when one man one vote is forbidden?

  3. Redguantlet says:

Salvador Espriu: Poem 25 of The Bull Skin…

We will tell the truth without repose
    For the honour of serving
    Under the feet of all

    We detest big stomachs
    And fancy words
    The indecent glitter of gold
The badly dealt cards of fate
The thick smoke of the powerful..

With the song, in the dark /
High walls of dreams we will build /
By night, strange sounds reach us /
But let us close the door on fear…

    Salvador Espriu is a giant.

These people should not be in prison.

Spain is a medieval fcking backwater… fuck Spain…can I say that again as somebody who has lived here for 25 years? FUCK SPAIN… fuckng retard fckin nation…the Spanish right-wing? You can’t even begin to imagine how sick and fcked up they are….

The “Audencia Nacional” shouldn’t even be judging the case, it’s UNCONSTITUTIONAL… Puigdemonts is right, he facing a FUCKING SHAM TRIAL…

    Puigdemont us going nowhere, friends…

  4. Redguantlet says:

    Racista y blanca, abusos, desfases.
¿Proteger y servir? No, perpetuar un sistema de clases
    Que quede claro, seré sincero:
Antes pongo el culo en esquinas que me hago madero!”

  5. Chris says:

Everyone freedom of speech and who they wish to vote with …. x

  6. Jim alexander says:

The Spanish Govt had no option

They held an illegal referedum in 2015 which the Spanish Govt ignored – however tagged onto this one was that after a yes vote they would declare UDI

Well that wee thing called the law in spain says you cant – so you get lifted and charged

Elections in december will wipe out the nationalist majority and the courts deal with those who broke the law

This was a right wing catalan coup – nothing more / nothing less

The elections on 21st december restore catalunya to democracy in fair and free elections / not the sham referendum in which 60% of the electorate didnt take part

Bit like the 55% in scotland – its as though your vote counted for nothing and is ignored by the Scottish Govt

    1. Chris Clark says:

Did you mean the 62% who voted to remain?

    2. Malcolm Kerr says:

An extreme view, Jim. ‘Right wing coup’? None of the voters beaten up by Spanish riot police were arrested, and charged, or given the benefit of a judicial process. That’s not ‘the rule of law’.
Also hard to see how the majority view in 2014 ‘counted for nothing’. I believe Scotland is still part of the UK and I don’t recall a UDI at any point. Wake up to the fact that this is a debate you’ll need to engage in all the way – until you lose. Or change your mind, of course!

    3. Seumas MacDhòmhnall says:

Why wad the referendum by illegal? Shuirly, whan there a significant proportion o the population that’s independentist, there should be a referendum? Is a democracy no a place that lat’s fowk vote on things, inspecially whan there’s a important issue that a major pairt o the population is in favour o?

Puidgemont is mibbe pairt o a richt-wing pairty, but the twa ither major independentist pairties, ERC an CUP, is mair left-wing. CUP is anti-capitalist even.

While, it’s true that anerly a minority o voters haed thair votes coontit in the end, aboot 10% o the population votit an haed thair votes confiscate by the Spainish polis. Sae mair than hauf the population actually gaun oot an votit.

Oot o the votes we ken o, it’s 92% o the voters an 43% participation (sae 39.6% o the total registered voters votit fur independence). Lat’s imagine a scenario whaur there wis mair voters: we can imagine that we add 25% o the registered voters (fur a participation rate o 78%, mair than fur Brexit) tae the real totals. Even gif aw thae votes wad been fur union, that wad been 1,505,938 fur union an 2,044,038 fur independence. Sae a victory fur independence even wi significantly mair unionist participation.
