Independent Scottish Journalism

Two years ago we were on the brink of closure with exhaustion and financial gloom. But we sorted it out, cut some costs and got back on our feet. Now we’re in much better shape.

At the turn of the year we launched our brand new website which archived a decades worth of content and created much easier navigation and an integrated contributors section.

Last month we launched a major marketing campaign with our new posters going up in cafes, shops and pubs across the country as we try and reach out to new audiences. See all the designs here.

Tomorrow we launch our new book: ‘Building Catalonia: Self-Determination and Emancipation’ with our Catalan colleagues Pol-len. You’re invited to the launch – … (or you can buy it here).

Later this week – as part of our commitment to equality and diversity in the media – we launch the first of our two guest editor spots that we run each year. These are fully funded opportunities for someone to “takeover” Bella and find new audiences, unearth new networks and surprise and challenge our readership. We’re all in our own silos and this is a chance to try and break out of these blindspots.

We are committed to writing from outside the central belt, that’s why two of our four regular columnists are from outwith Glasgow and Edinburgh, with Mairi McFadyen bringing news from Inverness and George Gunn bringing his long-running column from Caithness.

All of this costs money, quite a lot of money.

We have done this without crowd-funders or advertising or corporate backers.

If you find any value in what we do, please consider a small monthly donation. This is independent journalism, beholden to nobody and funded solely by its readers, but it needs you to support it. Please give whatever you can.
