I highly recommend a book called War Plan UK by Duncan Campbell, Anchor Press Ltd (1982), ISBN 0-09-150671-9 for a brutal discussion of the UK’s farcical civil defence actions in the early 1980s, and a good description of the effects of a nuclear strike on the UK. Unfortunately I only discovered it a few years ago.
This spectacular radio play will be 35 years this June. I remember vividly when it was first aired. It was an essential part of the Anti-War/Anti-Nuclear Missiles movement in Germany at the time. The NATO Double Track Decision (NATO Doppel Beschluss) of 1983 brought a hot nuclear war to Europe. Peace groups in Germany used this brilliant play and the animated movie of 1986. Listening to it now has not lost one iota of its depressing first broadcast. Unfortunately for all of us, the real dangers of it manifesting are greater than ever before. With Gavin Williamson stating that the UK must prepare for war with Russia and China.
35 years later, the responsible people for Cold War II have learned absolutely nothing. Time to re-broadcast and share widely.

Please allow me to add that I just now realized that Peter Sallis is also the voice of Wallace from ‘Wallace and Gromit’, an infinitely more entertaining animation series by Nick Park. MAkes it odd, when You know that. Wallace without Gromit in a serious setting.
