  1. Abulhaq says:

Culture, a major element in the quality of life of a nation is another aspect of the drive for independence. Our politicians, constrained by the anal-retentive interests of the media symbolized by £$€¥, rarely discourse on this topic and when they do the stamp elitist, romantic or simply irrelevant is affixed. There is energy here. Energy fuelled by imagination, national ambition and above all, hope. The large states in Europe seem, I hope temporarily, culturally in thrall to the trash-god of opiate-entertainment à la americaine. Compare Europe 1913 with 2013 and the intellectual fire seems to have been smothered by ephemeral, cheap, tawdry, mind numbing megajunk which has turned our continent into a dependent province for globalized banality huxters; culture “dumping” on a grand scale. Scotland is not an exception. We appear as addicted to junk culture as we are to junk nosh. However, we have an alternative. A remarkably rich, varied and for politico-historical reasons, neglected or underdeveloped indigenous culture. One that before things went so terribly wrong was part of the great European cultural dynamic. As well as political renewal we must have a cultural renaissance. Both will be experimental, trial and occasional error. Let us be inspired by the magnificent cultural “ferment” that galvanized Europe of 100 years ago. Viva Alba Saor!
