I wonder how differently this would’ve played out in the media had it taken place in Manchester instead of Edinburgh, which, lets face it, it plausibly could have.

One thing’s for sure – the BBC wouldn’t have had the story buried in a regional section of their website, it would have been front-page material.

Dear old aunty really does seem to believe that anything that happens in Scotland is, by definition, only of interest to Scots.

    1. bellacaledonia says:

      How do you mean?

  2. Tocasaid says:

It’s been on the BBC at Ten and on Sky tonight. Excellent publicity for Scotland, I think. We’re entitled to feel proud at this!

The Farage protest left some wonderful moments of mutual incomprehension. This is nice from Ron, a UKIP Candidate in Plymouth:

    Ron Northcott ‏@RonNorthcott1 6h

Difficult to understand. My father fought with Scots in WW2, and now they want to be governed by the unelected in Brussels.

@politicsworld @Nigel_Farage Who would subsidise your free prescriptions, tuition fees and care for the elderly? No foreign aid from England

Just saw clip of jocks haranguing Nigel Farage. Unbelievably, one strung a whole sentence together – ‘Scum’, and was sober.

@politicsworld @Nigel_Farage Amazed that fifty Jocks could get out of bed that early. It’s not signing on day, is it or is the chemist open?

I also like this from Kenny Farquharson ‏@KennyFarq 9h:

It’s only the (current) absence of a political vehicle for those views here, with a charismatic leader, that prevents us having same problem

    —-

This seems to be the suggestion from the editor of a national newspaper that if we only had someone as charismatic as Nigel Farage we’d be toppling over ourselves to move to the far right, anti-EU, homophobic policies of UKIP. It’s an extraordinary claim to make and one that fails to stand up to any scrutiny.

What does it tell us about his view of politics?

  5. Macart says:

Clearly these folks don’t like the idea of their ‘hero’ being publicly barracked. Mind you if that’s their idea of a hero…… 🙂

  6. John says:

All looks a bit Fascist on behalf of the leftie rentamob. Denying access and free speech . .

  7. Douglas says:

I beg to differ, but these kind of antics we don’t need.

Farage should have been left well on his own to order his pint – they don’t sell much John Smith Bitter up here – and the independence cause would be a lot better for if yesterday’s escrache hasn’t happened: -://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Escrache,

Personally I don’t believe in escraches unless under the most extreme circumstances which threaten democracy. They’re not democratic. Nigel Farage has just as much a right to have a pint in a bar as any Scotsman does. You either believe in the word or you don’t, and this is not the 1930’s, Farage may be a racist but he;s not for putting an end to democracy like the fascists of the 30’s were. Above all, he’s an idiot and he should have received the punishment idiots receive, which is to be ignored.

Equally, the floating voter will go with the headlines. The floating voter doesn’t give two shits about politics mainly, and this is fuel to the fire for the headline makers. Wake up people!

Farage would have received exactly the same treatment at any other time if he had come to Scotland, but it just so happens he came during the independence campaign, and this was the time to give him the treatment he deserves and ignore him.

    1. John says:

Scotland is in a mess, the far left with their fascist tendencies, soon to be linked with Labour
The SNP, who are closet racists, with their irrational loathing of the English
Right thro’ the middle comes Mr reasonable Darling .. .
      – All over bar the shouting

      1. James Coleman says:

Absolute rubbish. You are clearly not of sound mind. If you want racism go and look at the below the line comments today in the Guardian and Telegraph. There you will find literally 1000s of racist and bigoted comments by the English against Scots, other EU nationalities, blacks, muslims, homosexuals, feminists, as well as the comments of a UKIP candidate for Plymouth. one Ron Northcott, above. It is truly ironic that anly a few weeks ago the English were complaining of racism by the Scots against THEM.

        1. John says:

I do not need to I can tell by your response you are rattled & may have to face up to the truth of these extremes within Scotland.
The public has now seen the unacceptable face of the lefties and nationalists in Scotland

      2. James Coleman says:

        @John
What, me rattled? You are the rattled one. You don’t want to go to the sites I mentioned because it would not suit your agenda to see that the English are far more extreme and racist than the Scots.

    2. James Coleman says:

What ridiculous hyperbole. This was nothing like an escrache. It was fifty or so University students and minor Labour Activists mobbing the Leader of the racist UKIP at a political demo and suddenly it is the Nuremberg Rally all over again in the English media. In terms of the demos in England against politicians on a scale of 1 to 10 this was about a 1. And the comment “… the floating voter will go with the headlines …” of course he will and his deduction as a Scot will be (actually is now) that Farage is an idiot and a big cry baby.
Thank God that for once the BBC had the balls to challenge Farage’s version of events. This was a non-event, and it is sad to see people here treating it as important. Get a life, there are far more important things going on in the real world.
And I’ve had a really enjoyable day today reading the racist comments by the English below the line in the Guardian’s and Telegraph’s articles. They are full of racism and xenophobia by the English supporters of UKIP and the general anti-Scottish English, against the Scots, members of the EU, the Blacks, the Muslims the Homosexuals, the Feminists, you name a group and they are railing against it.
What hypocrisy? Only a few weeks ago many of these very same people were whining and whinging that the Scots were racist towards the English.

  8. Douglas says:

And, by the way, this will have an international repercussion…Farage’s comments about Fascism will be reprinted around the world. Farage is all over the European press because of the UK exit from the EU…

I can’t be the only one who thinks this is a skirmish won and a battle lost…

    I

    1. Bob Cassells says:

So a group of students hold a non-violent protest against a right-wing racist homophobe and they’re accused of being ‘fascists’ and a disgrace to Scotland? Give me a break! Those youngsters had the commitment and conviction to get out onto the street to express their beliefs – a desire for an equal society free from racism and homophobia where the less fortunate are helped, not scorned. Well done to all of them. The mealy mouthed criticisms directed at them only give comfort to those who want a country fashioned to the ideals of Farage. Not the Scotland that I want.

    2. bellacaledonia says:

I disagree, it was a perfectly legitimate protest. He ran away. People are allowed to – and should be – angry. He’s given wall to wall coverage by the right wing media and this direct action broke through the media bubble that protects him and ignores his actual policies. That the Scotsman (editorial today) and Wee Willie Rennie have tried to make this about freedom of speech is, frankly, laughable. The more he’ exposed as a bigot, a racist and a homophobe the better. People always criticise young people for being apolitical and apathetic, the RIC and other groups like them are a sign of a healthy political culture. Good for them.

  9. Douglas says:

    James, greetings.

I;m being pragmatic and you’re being emotional. Be emotional if you want, it makes us all feel better.

I understand the young people who protested against Farage, I would probably have done the same when I was 20.

But I’m baffled that so many think yesterday such a good idea who are much over that age. What is this, a cocaine party? We’re trying to build a Nation State. That requires gravitas, whether you like it or not, and Farage was all over the papers today calling the SNP fascists….for no net gain, for nothing.

So you felt you think you’ve seen some kind of justice served on those commenting below the line? Well done, James, it’s all about you after all.

Personally, if the Labour Party and the Tories had chipped in thegither, they couldn’t have come up with a better story for the tabloids to run all weekend.

    Slainte

    1. James Coleman says:

“I;m being pragmatic and you’re being emotional. Be emotional if you want, it makes us all feel better.”

The normal stupid answer of someone who doesn’t know what he is talking about.
And the rest of your reply is absolute nonsense as well.

      1. Douglas says:

        Dear James,

I will do you the favour of paying you common courtesy, which you do not pay me, for the simple reason that we are in the countdown to a referendum which it has taken 100 years to achieve, and for no other reason. Otherwise I would not reply to you, because I do not like your tone at all. It is precisely that tone which will lose us the referendum.

I am trying to imagine you in a bar with friend who is humming and hawing about voting yes, and it makes me feel that we are going to lose this referendum. And then what, James? You will be allowed to indulge in self-righteous indignation and the people who live in Scotland – wherever they are from – will be treated with total contempt and disdain for the foreseeable future.

Maybe you, Bella Caledonia and Mike Small are right and maybe I am wrong, maybe the ground to be won is on the left. But I doubt it very much that the pensioners of Aberdeen and the housewives of Ayr are sleeping radicals. The ground to be won is in the centre, and the Farage thing is a total own goal. Of course, I might be wrong about that and you might be right, but the fact is we don’t know…..I would rather live in a cloud of doubt than be so sure of things as you seem to be.

There is a desperate need in Scotland for people to stop FEELING, which is always the easiest thing and start THINKING.

      2. James Coleman says:

        @at Douglas 18/5/13 1207
What a load of self righteous twaddle. And stop your patronising tone. It doesn’t impress me.
        For example:
“Dear James,” You think that proves you’re reasonable?
“I do not like your tone at all.” That’s just too bad
“It is precisely that tone which will lose us the referendum.” Absolute nonsense.
“You will be allowed to indulge in self-righteous indignation” There you go again. No real argument so you resort to insults.
“the Farage thing is a total own goal.” Disagree
“There is a desperate need in Scotland for people to stop FEELING, which is always the easiest thing and start THINKING.”
One of the problems with the YES campaign is that there is not enough FEELING in it and too much thinking and worrying about what others might think about us, particularly when applied to the English. They are irrelevant in the campaign.

  10. jdmank says:

You have to wonder why the Tories are so scared of a party with zero representation in Westminster?
    just who are these people?
they appear to hold far more power than their standing in the polls would allow them, even the press are printing every last little thing about Farage and his gang.

These are sinister people with equally sinister goals
just look at that twat Lord Monkton who’s opinion of Scotland is beutifully encapsulated in this little gem

“The Scots are subsidy junkies whingeing like a trampled bagpipe as they wait for their next fix of English taxpayers’ money.”

The spurious wailing about suppression of freedom of speech seems only concerned with poor Mr Farages rights, who can apparently snap his fingers and he’s got himself a press conference whereas the protesters have one chance to put their point over and that’s when the cameras are there otherwise its just two people having an argument in the street,

We seem to have lost the passion we used to have in this country and to stand up a shout loudly about what we believe in remember the poll tax, and the miners strikes, were now so cowed by the pc brigade were afraid to say what we really think,

good god go back to edwardian times and their are plenty of political rallies where the candidate was lucky to escape with his life after opposing factions started fighting.
