We’ve Earned the Right to be Free

In the first of a brand new series here’s Citizen Smart with a specially Bella commissioned song. If the independence movement was looking for an anthem, we could do a lot worse.

‘Ye’ll find a welcome here, if yer lands a place o’ fear, yer part of Scotland’s tribe’

    Beautiful, truly beautiful 🙂

  2. “We’ll make Midge Ure our king” ?!?

    1. Angus McPhee says:

      !!! 🙁

  3. Clydebuilt says:

Citizen Smith has penned a nice ditty on the BBC (said he’d have it up on youtube tonight). Heard it today in St. Enoch’s square. Helped to bring a ray of sunshine to a rain soaked “Illuminate the Debate” rally. He will have a bigger, more positive influence on the referendum than his brother

    1. Clydebuilt says:

Should have been Citizen Smart. appologies

  4. annie says:

I heard him today too; funny and uplifting! Unfortunately ‘my’ tribe deserted me – Saturday mornins are cut ‘n’ blow dry days 🙁 Mahatma Gandhi could have been speakin’ and they STILL wouldnae have ventured oot in the rain (and I’m talkin aboot the men!)

  5. Lord and Lady Saughton says:

“we could do a lot worse” – I’m sure youse will, can somebody roll in here and do some proper art direction please, starting on the strange american suburban background the blog is employing and then moving through the various strata of imposters.

    1. bellacaledonia says:

Strange Norwegian suburban background, if you please

  6. Ben Power says:

Brought tears to my eyes of joy, what a great song. Thank you so much for initiating it all, and thank you so much to the composer and performer. I have passed it along in my network as well.

Have the Scots earned the right to be free? I say no. I agree with the principle that every nation has the right to self-determination, but the right has not been earned. Since the Union, scotland whole heart-idly helped suppress freedom movements across the world who opposed imperialism…for no other reason than it paid well to do so. I have solidarity with those who want freedom, but earn it you have not.

  8. Did you not listen to the song’s lyrics Paddy ? And how could Scotland have “whole heart-idly helped suppress freedom movements across the world who opposed imperialism”, when Scotland did not exist as a political entity ?. I think you mean “the Scottish ruling elite”, the very people who are now leading the anti- independence campaign, The ‘we” is the rest of us. on the other side of the debate. The point of the song. Go listen again

    1. barry says:

I’m somewhat torn on that point. Its hard to appreciate the intricacies of a people who can walk out a union by voting on it, and still need to be convinced. Lets be honest, popular support for foreign wars is high in Scotland, probably correlated to the fact the Scots are a very nationalistic people. If i was to take your point of view, i would need to accept that a vanguard movement of bourgeois Scots have used nationalism to betray the interests of the working class (or whatever term you want to use to describe everyone else) over the past 200 years. Even if i accept that i would now need to recognize that the RIC is a vanguard on the opposite side of the scale hoping to lead the Scots to a more fruitful future….so should i forgive the majority of the population their mistakes because you exist…’we’ is the whole not the select few. P.S. you’re quite right i haven’t listened to the song…i just like to see if anyone would take on the issue.
