Our First Indy Anthem

Paulo’s Nutini’s new album ‘Caustic Love’, is out next month. The latest track to be released is ‘Iron Sky’. It features an extract of the political speech given by Charlie Chaplin at the end of The Great Dictator. The powerful lyrics command listeners to “rise” from our “cold society”.

Is this our first indy anthem? The opening line, “we are proud individuals, living for the city” makes sense to me as does his claim that we must put our “mind[s] over fear and into freedom”. Turn it up …

Oh it’s brilliant – total goosebumps!

One of the most astonishing pieces of music ever written or performed. I advise everyone to put the earphones on and watch and listen. Truly mesmerizing! And it sets Paolo well on the way to joining Dylan and Lennon as a songwriter of the people. Moreover, the fact that the song is an anthem for Scotland’s independence will mark it as a classic to be ever remembered!

Great song, the lyrics however are pretty generic, they could be applied to just about any cause. Sure when he’s screaming’ freedom’ towards the end it could be construed as him making a political statement – but as far as I’m aware he hasn’t.

If someone can point me to an interview where he categorically states this song is about Scottish independence and he’s a supporter then fine.

Until then, I’d just hold off on the categoric declarations, Thomas. It’s setting yourself up for a fall.

I’d doubt his record label would want him to make public any feelings in fear of losing sales.

    Great song and performance.

I saw him at the rally in September, on Carlton Hill. That’s enough for me 😉

    Hi Tartan Fever,

While I acknowledge your pragmatism and cautiousness, the time for that is now over. This is the time for tye fight, the fight for our liberty and new enlightenment. If you have any doubt over Paolo Nutini’s position, I ask you to click on the ollowing link and counter my earlier statement that Iron Sky is not a rallying call for the people of Scotland to determine our own future. Your call?

    A MAN’S A MAN…. SURELY!?

  8. Clydebuilt says:

This Thursday coming Johan Lamont stands up and says “we are proud individuals, living for the Union” Later that day Paulo’s Nutini talks of his anger that his new work has been quoted and used to help keep nukes close to home, etc.
    Brilliant music.

Reblogged this on The Ego Factor and commented:
Phenomenal new track from Paisley’s own Paolo Nutini. About Independence? You be the judge but, ‘working for the city’ sounds an awful lot like London stealing the wealth to me. Hard to ignore, ‘over fear into freedom’ either. In either case, cracking tune. One of his best.
