This is an excellent interview, thanks very much for posting
Great interview.
The section from 20mins to 25 mins where Curtis talks about power (and how to deal with it) is truly insightful and a timely reminder for those organising Indyref2.
The last section, from roughly 45mins to 55mins is utterly fantastic.
Thanks for posting.
Curtis calls for a compelling idea or vision for the future but I think what is blocking this idea from emerging is climate change. Despite all the disinformation surrounding climate change people understand that it is real, scientifically proven and very, very serious. We also understand that we’ve passed the point where we can prevent climate change – it’s just about mitigation now.
The only imaginative response that I’ve come across is Guy MacPherson (nature bats last) with his calm acceptance of human extinction. An attempt to philosophise human extinction drawing on Buddha, Nietzsche and others.
It’s hard to create, imagine, or envision a future when all we can really do is brace and prepare for the crunch.
The end is nigh.
That’s the Guy McPherson position not mine – I retain a tiny bit of optimism. My point is that it’s very difficult for the Left to come up with a compelling vision for the future, an alternative to Capitalism, while the threat of climate change looms over us.
Imaginative responses should also include Timothy Morton and E O Wilson.
