There’a a flurry of writing competitions, prizes and opportunities … here’s some of them with deadlines looming this month:

Gutter Magazine, Scotland’s Magazine of new writing, is looking for submissions of prose and poetry in English, Scots, Gaelic and other languages for its 18th Issue.

RLS – “Writers living in Scotland! You’ve until 31 Jan to apply for @scottishbktrust’s Robert Louis Stevenson Fellowship.”

The Robert Louis Stevenson Fellowship is an annual award that allows professional writersliving in Scotland to enjoy a month-long residency at the Hôtel Chevillon International Arts Centre at Grez-sur-Loing in France with a stipend of £1,200. Each year, four writers are invited to spend time with other artists and absorb fresh cultural experiences.

When the Blackbird Sings invites you to “submit a piece of writing (maximum 1000 words) which encapsulates the whole, or an element of, the wonder of the feminine”.

Clochoderick Press, in partnership with Paisley 2021 culture bid, is a brand new, non-profit, literary organization based in Paisley itself. We are a small press who will publish individual collections of poetry along with a bi-annual literary journal, as well host an annual poetry competition. We also organize spoken word open mic nights and we are about to undergo workshops to allow beginner writers a glimpse into the world of publishing.

Pyromania is a bursary programme created by to support playwrights based in Scotland to develop their skills in experimental writing.

Each playwright selected will receive:

– A £1000 cash bursary.

– Between 6-8 mentoring meetings over the course of a year

– A rehearsed reading of the script at the end of year with a professional cast (scheduled to take place at Tron Theatre as part of Take Me Somewhere, May 2019).

Writing & Imaging 21st-Century Scotland: dialogues across spaces & forms Aix-en-Provence, 14–15 June Deadline: 31 Jan

“If writers in the 1990s placed Scotland on the map, the new millennium ushered in a variety of works of fiction that contributed to the expansion of that map and to an integration of notions that shift the focus from the national to that of an examination of Scotland in a context that foregrounds the post-national and the cosmopolitan.”
