Saturday Night Howff with Ruby Gaines, Zoe Graham and Trashcan Sinatras

howff /haʊf/. A favourite meeting place or haunt, especially a pub.

Welcome to Saturday night at the Howff, Bella’s lounge for the lockdown. This week we feature Ruby GainesZoe Graham and Trashcan Sinatras.

Ruby Gaines is the powerful new two-toned project of Glasgow-based singer, songwriter and guitarist, Megan Airlie. Airlie assembled her new moniker from the names of her two grandmothers. As she says, ‘I always have been one to carry the past with me’.

Yesterday saw the release of Ruby Gaines’ first single, Cardamom. With hints of such emotionally eloquent singers as Jeff Buckley and Judy Garland, the song certainly has a nostalgic flavour. Gaines’ bold and stirring vocals are supported gorgeously by radiant backing voices and R&B instrumentation, evoking the warm glow of a fond memory and the blue melancholy of longing for a lost past.

Cardamom is released by the newly formed label and management outfit ICEBLINK LUCK. Co-founded by Stina Tweedale, of Honeyblood fame, and Robert Kilpatrick from the Scottish Music Industry Association.

Also out yesterday was Glasgow-based singer-songwriter Zoe Graham‘s new EP, Gradual Move. Charting a narrative journey through various formative experiences, Gradual Move wears its heavy heart on its sleeve. At only 22 years old, Graham’s lyrics are steeped in nostalgia, reflecting on artefacts from former lives, the record is a reminder to cherish the things we keep precious – even as we move forward. The songwriter’s story is told across the record’s four songs, backed by elegant, synth-driven melodies, with grace and charm.
