January Blues Playlist

January is a bit of a blue month, and with Wednesday being the greyest of the days, I have compiled a melancholy playlist to souse the cockles of your sodden heart. It does one good to indulge in a bit of righteous woe from time to time – plus its tax return season and there’s plenty of Weltschmerz to go round, so, here are some my all time favourite musical laments. These have kept me company through many a ruminative bus journey home, and provided the soundtrack to the times in my life when I have been feeling things extraordinarily deeply. I bid you take yourself to the nearest available ocean and let that single, tasteful tear spill from the edge of your pooling eyelid, serenaded by such saturnine songsters as Jeff Buckley, Leonard Cohen, Cat Power, Nina Simone and The Brian Jonestown Massacre. Whether it be because of heart break, or simply because, try hard as you might, no one ever understands you, relish in that particular kind of joy that comes from being sad.
