Isolating Israel, a Pariah State
On the day that an independent inquiry by the United Nations concluded that Israel has committed and is continuing to commit genocide against Palestinians in Gaza, over 750 Scottish cultural organisations, collectives and artists have backed a cultural boycott of Israel amid growing international efforts to isolate the country.

The moves are called for in the same week as Spain’s prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, has called for Israel to be barred from international sports competitions [ Spain’s PM calls for Israel sports ban as rocket-launcher contract reportedly cancelled | Spain]. This could have particular impact ahead of next years World Cup.
Now this football boycott is gaining traction. Novara reports:
“Today a broad coalition of former international football players, football supporters’ groups, human rights organisations, advocacy networks and influencers has launched a campaign calling for a boycott of Israeli football. The #GameOverIsrael campaign, launched today, is urging football federations in Belgium, England, France, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Scotland and Spain to suspend the Israeli national team, ban Israeli club sides from continental competition and prevent Israeli players from joining domestic leagues.”
Prominent supporters include former French footballer Eric Cantona and former England player and commentator Gary Lineker, as well as Greek economist Yanis Varoufakis, Irish actor Liam Cunningham, and British artist Bobby Vylan. Coordinated protests are planned across all nine countries, with campaigners demanding federations take a stand against Israel’s assault on Palestinian life, including the destruction of sports facilities and the killing of athletes in Gaza. Richard Falk, president of the Gaza Tribunal and former UN special rapporteur, said: “Israel has for many years used culture and sports to whitewash its violations of international law and human rights, and sporting governing bodies have been shamefully complicit during this genocide. It’s perfectly legitimate and morally imperative to demand that football federations across Europe and the world boycott Israel.”

This follows the Dutch and Irish broadcasters calling for a boycott of the Eurovision Song Contest if Israel is allowed to take part [Netherlands ready to join Eurovision boycott over Israel]. The Dutch public broadcaster, AVROTROS, confirmed the Netherlands will join Slovenia, Iceland, Spain and Ireland in boycotting next year’s Eurovision Song Contest if Israel is involved.
Such high profile boycotts undermine the credibility of entire events and the possibility of them being cancelled altogether grows. These moves go on as prominent actors and musicians use their platform to get a message across to millions of people. Award-winner Hannah Einbinder said “F*** ICE and Free Palestine” after receiving Best Supporting Actress at the Emmy’s. Afterwards she stated: “”It is my obligation as a Jewish person to distinguish Jews from the state of Israel. Our religion and our culture…is really separate to this sort of ethnonationalist state.”

This came in the same week that Israeli conductor Ilan Volkov stunned the audience with an emotional speech denouncing Israel’s war on Gaza at the BBC Proms in London. Volkov, who led the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall, said he carried “great pain” and could no longer stay silent. The BBC cut its broadcast before his speech, saying it was not informed in advance. He described the killing of thousands of Palestinians, the repeated displacement of families, and the collapse of hospitals and schools.
“Innocent Palestinians are being killed in thousands, displaced again and again, without hospitals and schools, not knowing when the next meal will come,” he told the audience. “We cannot let this go on any longer, every moment that passes puts the safety of millions at risk.” Volkov later announced in an interview that he will no longer perform in Israel in protest against its atrocities in Gaza.

This work coincides with solidarity to support the the Global Sumud Flotilla – a fleet of over 50 ships from over forty countries – heading to break the aid blockade – that has already been under drone attack.

Now dockworkers in Genoa have announced a Europe-wide stoppage if Israeli forces block the Global Sumud Flotilla from delivering supplies to Gaza. All in all it amounts to efforts on multiple fronts to isolate and boycott Israel and remove its ability to sportswash and artswash its atrocities.

Open Letter to the Scottish Government: A Call for a Cultural Boycott of Israel
Now, in a groundbreaking display of collective solidarity with Palestine from across Scotland’s cultural sector, over 750 cultural organisations, cultural collectives, artists and cultural workers have signed a letter calling on the Scottish government to:
Enact a full state boycott of Israel
Remove Baillie Gifford from state-funded national museums and galleries
Endorse a cultural boycott of Israel
Decriminalise protest
The letter also declares no confidence in the culture secretary, Angus Robertson, who had secretive meetings with the Israeli deputy ambassador to the UK in 2024, describing Scotland as a ‘friend’ of Israel.
Last month, Holyrood voted overwhelmingly to boycott Israel, becoming the first parliament in the world to do so. The Scottish cultural sector now uses its full collective power to hold the government to account.
Over 230 cultural organisations in Scotland are already backing the cultural boycott of Israel (PACBI), the highest proportional uptake of the cultural boycott anywhere in the world, sending an overwhelming message to the government that Scottish culture stands proudly against genocide and apartheid, and proudly for the liberation of the Palestinian people.
The letter with a full list of signatories has now been sent to the First Minister, and will be published by Art Workers for Palestine Scotland on our instagram tomorrow.
A spokesperson for Art Workers for Palestine Scotland said:
“This open letter represents the largest demonstration of solidarity with Palestine in the history of the Scottish arts. Cultural organisations, filmmakers, visual artists, cultural workers of all description have joined together to make these demands from our sector to the government with a clear voice. We will not stand by in silence, and we will not allow art to be complicit in the genocide in any way. No culture without Palestinian culture.”

Fuch off And fuch off big time. Please feel free to ban me from youe blog.
Have you been on the tonic wine again?
The post is incomprehensible and says only one thing – ‘pay me some attention’. Best response to these types of nutters is to ignore them completely.
Don’t post at 5 in the morning Mechell. You don’t make sense.
“ Don’t post at 5 in the morning Mechell. You don’t make sense.”

It may not be five in the morning where she is posting from
You’re quite correct. It should have read “Don’t post Mechell – you don’t make sense.”
The UN verdict confirming that Israel was carrying out genocide in Gaza should be the trigger for countries to cease all arms sales to, impose sanctions on and ban Israel from all cultural and sporting events as has been done with Russia.
The actions of many European countries (excepting Spain, Netherlands & Ireland) gives me little confidence their governments have any appetite to do so while the US provides virtually unlimited support to Israel. The craven spectacle of UK institutions laying out the red carpet to the narcissistic convicted felon currently President of USA hoping he tickles their tummy gives me even less confidence of the UK government doing anything meaningful except criminalise those opposing the genocide.
Action in Europe to force governments to act will have to come from the populace itself as demonstrated by the Dpanish public.
Meanwhile the ongoing genocide of the Uyghur muslims in china goes unreported and ignored. But then we’re completely dependent on China for our manufactured goods and the Chinese aren’t Jews.
The Chinese government are not allies of the UK. The last time I checked we were not selling arms to China. China are not being financially and armed by our biggest ally USA. It is possible to be critical of China & Israel at same time. You are indulging not only in classic whitabootery It is possible but also trying to tar anyone who criticises Israeli government as antisemitic which is an offensive slur. Many prominent Jewish people are critical of the Israeli government both in UK and increasingly within Israel.
If you think the murder of 65,000 people, the flattening of all infrastructure, the constant forced movement of peoples and the starvation of Palestinians is justified have the courage to come out and say so. I don’t and I think that the UK government could and should do a lot more to try and prevent it rather than excusing and facilitating genocide.
John,
When Hamas attacked Israeli civilians on Oct7th they declared war on the state of Israel and Israel has responded. The fact that Hamas choose to hide behind their own civilian population leaves Israel with no choice.
If Hamas had any human decency they would hand back the surviving hostages and surrender and the killing would stop tomorrow.Unfortunately for the Palestinian people their ‘leaders’ are a Jihadist death cult and believe that anybody killed by the Jews will go straight to paradise.
As a historical comparison when Japan attacked Pearl Harbour they killed 2,500 Americans, by 1945 the US had killed well over 2 million Japanese. Would you consider the American response to be an act of genocide and an over reaction?
War is War and Hamas started it and if they had any human decency (they dont) it could end tomorrow.
John,
As for China and it’s ongoing genocide against its Muslim population (I see no marches in our major cities against this?)
are you arguing that because China is not our allie they can do whatever they want. Just in case your unaware of the situation over 1 million Muslims in Xianjang province are currently in concentration/re-education camps and forced sterilisation/abortions are been conducted in them. This is not whataboutery I’m just highlighting the double standards. It’s not on the TV (no journalists allowed in China)so nobody gives a shit.
John – I am not arguing we should ignore what is happening in China.
Hamas are a terrorist group and I certainly do not approve of what they did on October 7th but Israel had plenty of other options as to how to respond to the attack without committing genocide. Two wrongs do not make a right and the IDF is currently killing Palestinians at a ratio of 30:1 for Israeli’s on October 7th. Israel’s wrong is now on a much larger scale than Hamas’s wrong.
You should also consider Netanyahu’s historical role in promoting Hamas to diminish strength of PLO and Palestinian Authority. He is being enabled to commit not only genocide but potentially ethical cleansing as be would like to remove all Palestinians from Gaza.
As I have already stated the UK has much closer political links with Israel than China as well as a historical legacy from Balfour Agreement and the setting up of Israeli state. UK support for Israel is deeply embedded in the main political parties in UK through Friends of Israel organisations which are powerful lobbies with Conservative and Labour Party.
Your attempt to smear the many people in this country who want the UK (&Scottish) governments to go further in stopping the genocide in Gaza is risible and becoming more risible by the day as IDF flatten Gaza city and Israel torpedo’s all attempts for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
John – if you think Hamas handing over hostages tomorrow would stop Israel’s all out assault on Palestinians in Gaza you are living in a fantasy world. Israel have already unilaterally broken the original ceasefire then attempted to bomb Hamas negotiating team in Qatar, in violation of international law, purely because an agreement to cease hostilities was getting close.
Look at his Israel treats Palestinians in West Bank (under Palestinian Authority control as opposed to Hamas) again in violation of international law to understand the current Israeli government’s motivations. It has been getting increasingly clear since October 7th that current Israeli government are using October the 7th attack to make Gaza completely uninhabitable for Palestinians no doubt encouraged by Trump who sees a real estate opportunity from human suffering.
I repeat again your attempts to deflect and defend the Israeli government’s actions are risible.
You don’t haf talk a lot of pish John Learmouth: “Meanwhile the ongoing genocide of the Uyghur muslims in china goes unreported and ignored.”

John – FYI the Uk government imposed a range of sanctions on China in 2021 in response to the genocide of Uyghur. It has only sanctioned two individuals in Israeli government in response to genocide in Gaza (these sanctions may actually relate to Israeli government actions in West Bank?)
Even the right wing punsits o the Times Of Israel want the war of stupididy to continue or fot Netanyhoo to go on.
do want tyhe war stopped and want Netinyahoo out
Great to see these examples of people standing up to Israel’s genocide. Inspiring article. Thank you.
