Been saying this all along – SNP 1, Green 2. Why does SNP ask supporters to vote SNP 1&2 when the second vote has historically brought very few list seats; a better constituency vote makes list seats even less likely.
The only way it would make any sense for the SNP not to ask for “both votes SNP” would be if it did not stand any candidates on the regional list. And in return they would need to demand of the Scottish Greens that they stand no candidates on the constituency list. There’s no way either of these is ever going to happen: they are different parties, with different priorities, even if they share a common objective of independence. That’s party politics for you.
In truth, what we need is a truly proportional voting system – even if this would probably, in the short term, not yield a pro-independence majority of MSPs at Holyrood. But it would hopefully result in a politics less focussed on parties and more focussed on alliances.
