The Blue Dark and other music news
In a moment of reunions and reappearances (see Super Furry Animals and the much anticipated re-emergence of Boards of Canada with their first album in fifteen years, plus the return of the epic BMX Bandits, Soup Dragons and Teenage Fanclub at the Inspire Festival and Arab Strap’s ninth album Half Told Tales) it’s great to hear something new new.
Step forward Acolyte with their debut EP The Blue Dark on Lost Records.
Acolyte is a psychedelic ensemble based in Edinburgh, who blend dreamy electronica and spoken-word. The band is led by spooky chanteuse and polymath Iona Lee, along with Lost Map regular Gloria Black (of Maranta fame) on synth and vocals, producer/multi-instrumentalist Ruairidh Morrison, and percussionist Daniel Hill.
Acolyte’s distinctive sound is mesmeric, shaped by ‘layered loops, hypnotic grooves, storytelling and suspense.’ Lost Records tells us: “Developed through years of collaboration, The Blue Dark explores themes of awe, unease and ecological interconnectedness, tracing emotional responses to a world in flux. From the hazy instrumental opener ‘Digital Mirages’ to the uneasy grooves of ‘Warm Days In December’ and the cinematic drift of the title track, the EP moves between intimacy and abstraction, grounding poetic storytelling in layered loops and immersive sound design. A closing suite of remixes by Maniatrix, Ravelston and Eyes Of Others expands the EP’s world further, reframing its material through club-adjacent textures and deepening its sense of strange, shared exploration.”
Acolyte celebrate the launch of their debut EP ‘The Blue Dark’ at Leith Cricket Club, with performances from Maniatrix, Tom Bailey, Suzi Cunningham & Ascetic Practices.
