Dr Douglas Chalmers worked at Glasgow Caledonian University for 30 years as a lecturer and researcher in Economics, the Media and Journalism. He was for a period the Secretary of the Campaign for a Scottish Parliament, a member of the Scottish Constitutional Convention, then Secretary of the Communist Party in Scotland and Convenor of Democratic Left Scotland. He contested elections for the Communist Party at council, Westminster and European Parliament elections. He was the Communist Party candidate in the Govan by-election of 1988.
