James McCarthy is a former chairperson of the Scottish Centre for Geopoetics. After studying forestry at Aberdeen University he became Assistant Conservator of Forests in Tanzania and then Deputy Director (Scotland) of the Nature Conservancy. He has published a number of books, concentrating on the lives of Scottish explorers.
