KICK UP A SONG AND DANCE! at FASLANE SAT 5 JUNE 12.30 – 2.30
Nuclear Weapons Convention – Now we can!
Our message is simple: it’s time for governments to begin negotiating a Nuclear Weapons Convention (NPT)to ban all nuclear weapons. Our presence outside Faslane can show the overwhelming popular support for a Nuclear Weapons Convention(NWC). One week after the end of the important Non-Proliferation Treaty review conference, we can build on the enthusiasm for abolition and ensure prompt action for real human security.
June 5 is also the annual World Environment Day. Nuclear weapons and military security, like climate change, threaten the very future of the planet. It’s a time to make the links.
The NPT is a deal, between the nuclear-haves and nuclear-have-nots, struck in 1968 and reviewed every five years, that if the countries with nukes agreed to give them up, the countries without would promise not to acquire them – but this approach has not worked. A Convention, similar to the conventions that have already banned chemical and biological weapons, could end the threat posed by nuclear weapons and free badly needed resources to tackle environmental problems.
NWC is supported by Trident Ploughshares, Scottish CND, CND UK and the Scottish branch of Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (Scottish WILPF).
