Theresa May Day

CQpNYJEU8AAIDA7.jpg-largeAs Labour are uniformly denounced for being beyond the pale in their alleged shift left under Corbyn, the Tories in Manchester have marked out new territory to the far right. Ignoring the rogue buffoon Boris, the speech by the Home Secretary Theresa May was an astonishing mixture of contempt and barely concealed racial hatred. It may be that she feels that the only political contest she will face is that from UKIP, but it will fill even hardened Tory-haters with dread.

Ignoring the wave of public-spirited humanity towards asylum seekers and refugees facing the worst crisis since the second world war, she instead sought to limit the right to claim asylum in Britain and to announce attempts to deliver deep cuts in immigration. It prompted even the Telegraoph’s James Kirkup to write: “It’s hard to know where to start with Theresa May’s awful, ugly, misleading, cynical and irresponsible speech to the Conservative Party conference today. If you haven’t seen reports of it, allow me to summarise: “Immigrants are stealing your job, making you poorer and ruining your country. Never mind the facts, just feel angry at foreigners. And make me Conservative leader.”

Alan Travis writing in the Guardian observed: “She portrays the few thousand who have made it to Calais or to Britain as the “wealthiest, fittest and strongest”, with the pseudo-Darwinian implication that they are in some way queue-jumpers. But it is not surprising that the majority who make the journey are men in their twenties. They take the risk so that their families can follow them safely later. It is also not surprising that the wealthy are to be found fleeing war and persecution. Islamic State and Bashar al-Assad don’t check anybody’s bank balance before dropping a barrel bomb.”

The speech contrasts sharply with the recent report by Humza Yousaf to see at first-hand the plight of refugees fleeing across the Mediterranean. One politician going to see for himself the reality on the ground, the other stirring racial hatred for short-term political gain.

In one passage she said, in repatriation language that wouldn’t be out of place in a 1972 BNP pamphlet: ‘Mass immigration is forcing thousands of British people out of jobs and is making it “impossible” to build a “cohesive society”.

Much of it was incomprehensible and contradictory. If “Immigrants drive wages down” as she claims then the Govt needs to enforce minimum wage and gang labour law. She deliberately muddled and mixed refugees, migrants and asylum seekers in a jumble that would sit right at home in a Richard Littlejohn article. Cameron wants to use his renegotiation with the European Union ahead of the in-out referendum to reduce the “pull factors” to migrants – though many think this is a doomed mission. But, already the Governent has announced that new migrants from the EU will be banned from claiming benefits in the UK for four years.

It was a sad and dismal speech from a frightened cadaverous little woman who is bringing nothing to this world but fear and hatred.

There is considerable evidence that immigration to this country creates jobs, opportunities & wealth and contributes to vital services and key roles. It’s poverty that damages social cohesion and the desperately unequal society being carved out by these ideologues will only exacerbate that. This was Enoch Powell in high-heels, a tub thumping neo fascist speech to the blue rinse mob. She said: “There are millions of people in poorer countries who would love to live in Britain“. I certainly don’t.

I didn’t read the above article…but whatever it contained about May…I wholeheartedly agree with….and more

    1. Jackie cairns says:

I think they have all been on the old pipe. not one of them are making sense.
dribble drobble same old Twoddle, Same old- Same old. GO JEZZA THERE ON THE BACK FOOT.fUNNY HOW THE PRESS MENTIONED THE EGG INCIDENT,( which was staged of course) BUT NOT THE INCIDENT WERE THE OLD TORY B***ARD KNOCKED THE LADIES IPAD OUT OF HER HAND. THATS WHY WE HAVE MADE OUR OWN NEWS. #ReclaimTheNews. No one needs the media any more. we can get the truth out there our selves.

    2. Jackie cairns says:

We should all right to the human rights to see if this is legal what they are doing to the people of this country.

  2. John Mooney says:

This was a disgraceful Neo.Nazi speech to the rabid right, akin to 1930’s Germany! What a despicable example of a human being this insult to women shows herself to be,the tawdry demonising of the “OTHER” in her attempt to place herself as a front runner to replace the pig molester! May hangs herself by her own petard,e.g.”The Tory’s are still the nasty party”condemned by her own mouth, she also proves the old maxim “The Tory’s really are the stupid Party”

  3. Steve says:

Theresa May’s speech appeals to the majority of Tory voters. As long as we have FPTP they are in control of the U K for the foreseeable future with the support of only 25% of the U K electorate. Scotland only has one way out of this, but we rejected it a year ago. Now back to work, and work harder!!!

  4. Richard Easson says:

    Theresa May, I never will.

  5. Alison Grant says:

I am really appalled at this woman but not surprised. It should have been obvious as soon as the Tories became the government in the summer , that their true neo fascist policies would surface . The signs are all there for a nasty few years ahead . I hope that no one is under any illusion that these fascists are going to attack every human right that our society has enshrined in law over the last hundred years.

  6. leavergirl says:

“A frightened cadaverous little woman”? Why not skip the bilious ad hominems on your side before preaching to others?

    1. muttley79 says:

The article was hardly going to describe Theresa May as a man, given that she is a woman.

    2. Susan Macdiarmid says:

No lack of reason or substance there….

    3. Scott says:

At least Mike is referring to her specifically rather than her pathetic attacks on the generalised ‘other’.

      1. leavergirl says:

Does that justify ad hominems against women, in your opinion? If they say things “we dislike, hey, it’s open season, you figure? Not in my world. No sir.

        1. Cactuscheeks says:

I guess it’s hard to please all the people all the time. But let’s not elevate political correctness above human kindness. The sentiments in this article are not sexist in any way even if the wording doesn’t meet your standards. Try and see past that and contemplate the wider issues affecting all genders ages and ethnicities. I’m sure there is a grip you should be getting hold of somewhere

        2. Brian Fleming says:

So an ad hominem against a man would have OK for you, would it?

    4. I was trying to get to the bottom of her anger and reflect the aura she brings to the stage. Most racists fear others and I think that’s what she expresses. I think she is little in the sense of political stature not physically.

      1. leavergirl says:

Why not skip the ad hominems altogether (yes, men included), and “rise above ourselves”? Surely you can paint the aura well, with your gift of writing, without stooping to hit her, rather than what she represents?

    5. nell McLean says:

      @levergirl

Theresa May is a person with a position that she maintains with every inch of her vile fibre. Therefore, leavergirl, No ad hominem there!

I am a woman and I find her repugnant and rude. She is an embarrassment to my gender.

      slainte mhath

  7. bill fraser says:

I must admit i have deliberately body swerved the Tory conference and only caught snatches of it on the news However it seems that Teresa May has had some sort of brain storm to voice such a controversial speech. And she wants to be Prime Minister! Amazing.

  8. Kenneth Coutts says:

Shurely! her speech was agreed on by central office,in that case they are all one and the same.
Just 27% put them in . strewth!!
This english imperialist state caused these problems, but their trumpet media corporate owned stenographers spin a different story.
Disgraceful and sickening that this rogue state is allowed to function.

  9. Suzanne Bosworth says:

I’d expect to hear a speech like that coming from the BNP, or whatever the extreme right call themselves these days. The Tories believe they have five years’ free rein to attack social cohesion, community, kindness and compassion in these islands, and having got going with their guns on the poorest and most vulnerable they’ve now started terrifying pensioners. They can barely conceal their contempt for ordinary people just trying to live our lives.

I’m deeply ashamed to have this vicious government representing us. If May thinks she embodies the best of British, then no decent person will want to be associated with that depth of small-mindedness and ignorance. We’re better than that, as a people. We’re kinder, warmer, and we have good hearts.

    1. Linda Targett says:

      Completely agree with you.

  10. willie says:

I cannot be alone in the feeling that the UK is now like 1930s Germany.

The hatred being stoked up against foreigners is palpable and as we know Crystalnacht and all that followed thereafter was inspired by a policy expoused by government.

But the similarities don’t end there.

The race to conquest and thence to a World War also bears uncanny similarity as does the UKs economic collapse.

Maybe I am wrong. The UKs humanitarian bombing and troop deployments in the middle East together with an inculcated hatred of foreigners will deliver greatness again to Great Britain – but I fear not.

  11. Indepetdance says:

As former UK immigrant who has already been chucked out with her Scottish husband due to this woman’s fanaticism and (illegal) marriage-related income laws, and the granddaughter of hardworking Mexican immigrants vilified in her home country, May’s language here disgusts and angers me.

Furthermore, more and more people are speaking like this, ordinary people who should know fucking better. People who voted ‘Yes’ in the referendum, who know EU and Non-EEA immigrants in their personal and professional lives.

As someone of Jewish decent, this is downright fucking terrifying.

We want nothing more than to come back to a progressive Scotland, and to help build a new, inclusive future there, but in the interim, how will we do so? To live on a pittance a week if we lose the 6 pound-an hour jobs we were ‘lucky’ enough to get? Move into yet another moldy flat to develop more illnesses preventing said work?

  12. John Page says:

Relieved I stopped watching TV immediately after the Referendum so missed this speech……but photo in one of the papers of Osborne under a Union Jack and appeals for Security and Stability looked like a scene from V for Vendetta. Snipers on the roof in Manchester, NATO jets buzzing the Firth of Clyde this week in another excercise and promises to beef up the SAS.
We need to win the next IndyRef by at least 60/40 or they will crush us.
    John Page

    1. willie says:

The NATO jets that buzzed the Firth of Clyde in an attack and intercept scenario over Faslane and Coulport was passed off by the MOD as a solitary plane on a mapping training excecise.

Brings into sharp focus why the nuclear weapons establishment is up here and not in the South East.

Far better to have a nuclear disaster in Scotland than down south.

An incident at Coulport would make the devastation of Homs look like a picnic.

Well done the Jocks for allowing themselves to be the UKs target. And fair play to the Westminster for being smart enough to dump it up here.

Just like Dounrey and Sellafield and the uranium tipped sheing range at Dundrennan they certainly know where to dump stuff that the South East wouldn’t touch.

Tick tock do I hear folks say. But for who does the clock tock – could it be Jock?

  13. Ama says:

The other big story of the day was that UK does end-of-life care better than any other country. Has anyone else noticed the preponderance of foreign staff in hospitals and care homes? Time for some joined-up thinking, Theresa! Or should we just export geriatric patients to Poland, India or the Far East?

  14. old battle says:

Am I right that we saw no democratic debate, no resolutions discussed or motions approved at the Tory conference?
Were there only the staged diatribes from the pompous & posh reich of a Tory party who have adopted UKIP’s voice of hate with added venom?
Did we not hear the kind of extreme right-wing rhetoric not heard in British politics since the 1930s?
Is MS/Bella not right in exposing the extreme views of the party in power with state power at its finger tips?
Our democracy is under threat. This new brand of right but wrong Toryism needs monitoring very closely.
Bella and others need to look for further shifts beyond crass anti-worker neo-liberalism into the murky realm of the New Right seen in Hungary, Austria and France (Le Pen) and emerging once again in Germany. In addition we need to look west to the USA where the growing New Right movement (even more extreme than the T Party) has considerable influence on Tory Party thinking.
It is of critical significance that May is not just any minister but is The Home Secretary. She has enormous powers of state coercive and control forces to use in support of her rabid rhetoric.

  15. marnie anderson says:

I have a dreadful feeling of deja vu after that speech.
    Maggie incarnate.
    Two dreadful women.
Heaven help us if we don’t get our Independence soon.

    1. douglas clark says:

      Amen.
