As a Scot once wrote in a famous text on the destructive social consequences of merchants’ pursuit of their own self-interest:

The proposal of any new law or regulation of commerce which comes from this order [merchants and manufacturers], ought always to be listened to with great precaution, and ought never to be adopted till after having been long and carefully examined, not only with the most scrupulous, but with the most suspicious attention. It comes from an order of men, whose interest is never exactly the same with that of the public, who have generally an interest to deceive and even to oppress the public, and who accordingly have, upon many occasions, both deceived and oppressed it.

The masters upon these occasions are just as clamorous upon the other side, and never cease to call aloud for the assistance of the civil magistrate, and the rigorous execution of those laws which have been enacted with so much severity against the combinations of servants, labourers, and journeymen. The workmen, accordingly, very seldom derive any advantage from the violence of those tumultuous combinations, which, partly from the interposition of the civil magistrate, partly from the superior steadiness of the masters, partly from the necessity which the greater part of the workmen are under of submitting for the sake of present subsistence, generally end in nothing, but the punishment or ruin of the ringleaders.

    What happened to Varoufakis?

  3. Stuart says:

    Bless…

I wonder what Corbyn and Varoufakis made of the protestors heckling Nicola Sturgeon over her refusal to pay carers a ‘Living wage’?

Where the SNP in Holyrood voted with the Tories to deny carers this.

And some folk actually really believe that the SNP are ‘Progressive’!

Empty rhetoric from Corbyn. A history lesson in what was achieved in the 19th and early 20th century by people long dead; Labour’s finest hour and a catalogue of what needs to be done that hasn’t been done that Labour didn’t do when it was in power. But elect them again and it will all be done – not.

I noted his comment: ‘When we act together in solidarity, when we realise our collective power, we stop being individuals and get things done’.

The attraction of the ideology of collectivism and its inherent fatal flaw in one statement. If we just once again subordinate our individuality to an open ended Labour ideology all will be well for everyone.

No, Jeremy, if we do as you say we will just clear the way for the next generation of degenerate Labour leaders to exploit our naivety – see Brown and Flipper etc . And of course we will see the next generations of the poor and vulnerable being screwed for the greater good.

Hope you had a safe journey back to London.
