SAY Awards 2022 Shortlist

Today the Scottish Album of the Year Award revealed the shortlist for this year’s award, the shortlist for the Sound of Young Scotland Award and the winner of the Modern Scottish Classic.

The SAY Award shortlist is as follows (in alphabetical order). Who do you love?

AiiTee – ‘Better Days’

Constant Follower  – ‘Neither Is, Nor Ever Was’

Fergus McCreadie – ‘Forest Floor’

Hamish Hawk – ‘Heavy Elevator’

Hen Hoose – ‘Equaliser’

Kathryn Joseph – ‘for you who are the wronged’

Kobi Onyame – ‘Don’t Drink The Poison’

Niteworks – ‘A’Ghrian’
Teannaibh Dlùth (feat. Sian)

Proc Fiskal – ‘Siren Spine Sysex’

Walt Disco – ‘Unlearning’

One of this lot is set to take the coveted title of Scottish Album of the Year along with the £20,000 first prize.

Also five young and emerging artists have been selected for the Sound of Young Scotland Award, with one set to receive a funding package worth up to five grand to help create their debut record.

Previous winners of The SAY Award include Mogwai ‘As The Love Continues’ (2021), Nova ‘Re-Up’ (2020), Auntie Flo ‘Radio Highlife’ (2019), Young Fathers ‘Cocoa Sugar’ (2018), Sacred Paws ‘Strike A Match’ (2017), Anna Meredith ‘Varmints’ (2016), Kathryn Joseph ‘Bones You Have Thrown Me And Blood I’ve Spilled’ (2015), Young Fathers ‘Tape Two’ (2014), RM Hubbert ‘Thirteen Lost & Found’ (2013) and the inaugural winner Bill Wells and Aidan Moffat ‘Everything’s Getting Older’ (2012). To date, The SAY Award has distributed over £300,000 in prize money across ten previous campaigns, and 2022 is set to further amplify Scottish musical talent to a global audience.

    Interesting that traditional Scottish music is only represented through the hackneyed rather passe medium of jazz-ceilidh, ditto jazz, and there is no classical music. Flicking through the utubes, some of it isn’t good, and mediocre is the default. It looks more like a representation of the judges than music.

    1. I think there is actually ‘classical’ music – the competition is open. This is just the Top Ten of a wider process
