Edinburgh Book Festival Severs Ties with Baillie Gifford

It was perhaps inevitable after the Hay Festival dropped its sponsorship with Baillie Gifford last week, but environmental campaigners will claim another major victory today after the Edinburgh Book Festival announced it too will break, declaring: “The Edinburgh International Book Festival and Baillie Gifford have ended their 20-year partnership.”

In a strange statement the two organisations seemed to completely miss the point and – in PR terms alone – failed to gain credit from the situation. The EIBF stated: “The board and management of Edinburgh International Book Festival believe their ability to deliver an event this August that is safe and successful for audiences, authors and staff has been severely compromised, following the withdrawal of several authors and threats of disruption from activists.”

But protests and walkouts had been 100% peaceful, The action was simply writers withdrawing their labour, as is their right. To portray themselves as victims was just weird.

Allan Little, chair of the Edinburgh International Book Festival, said: “Our team cannot be expected to deliver a safe and sustainable festival this August under the constant threat of disruption from activists. This was a pragmatic response to that reality.”

Again, there was no threat. The protests had been 100% peaceful. This has echoes of the demonisation of mass peaceful protests against the war on Gaza, sidestepping the issue and portraying your self as victim while framing peaceful protest as violent.

Nick Thomas, partner, Baillie Gifford, said: “Our collaboration with the Edinburgh International Book Festival, spanning decades, was rooted in our shared interest in making Edinburgh a thriving and culturally vibrant place to live and work. In recent years we have been proud to support the Schools’ and Children’s programmes, providing free books and creating opportunities for young readers to meet authors.”

I mean, that’s great, but it’s worth repeating that the Edinburgh Festival happens when Scottish schoolkids are back at school.

Thomas continued: “The activists’ anonymous campaign of coercion and misinformation has put intolerable pressure on authors and the festival community.”

The campaigners were not anonymous. So not anonymous they signed open letters of protest and took the hit by withdrawing. Saba Sams, Mikaela Loach, Zadie Smith, Jessica Gaitán Johannesson, all Not Anonymous.

Here’s them being Not Anonymous last year (‘Writers Threaten Book Festival Boycott‘):

This year writers were Not Anonymous either.

Here’s this years list of Not Anonymous writers:

The people who are appalled that protest works are in denial about the level of change we are confronted with and the scale of the crisis we face.

It may well be that Baillie Gifford are not as bad as many brokers and advisers but they are still part of the problem. Climate Disruption will know no borders and will bypass no organisation. #KeepItInTheGround

  2. Tam Dean Burn says:

An important win and proof of the power of the cultural boycott campaign that Palestinian civil society have developed over many years now. It’s been astonishing how this example of it has made change happen so rapidly in even just the past week. The revulsion at the genocidal horror of what’s happening in Gaza and inspiration that here was a means to express that horror and make a real difference, combined with brilliant, tireless work by all involved at Fossil Free Books have made this happen. This is cultural intifada in action.

Well done to Bella Caledonia for supporting the boycott campaign all the way and standing up to the heavy pressure applied from other Scottish cultural forces. Hopefully they will now see the bigger picture in the almighty struggle to stop genocide and ecocide and show a little more grace and understanding that’s either EIBF or Baillie Gifford do in their appalling statements.

    Result!

  5. Wul says:

Does this mean we will no longer see authors creating literature in the hope that one day, some day (please God!) a trader in weapons-manufacturing stocks will use their work to distract from the evil source of their wealth at a cheese and wine party?

Gosh! How will Scottish literature survive? How will writers find the energy to write?

  6. Satan says:

I presume you will be publishing the letter and list if signees from authors who people have actually heard of asking the fossil fuels in Gaza people to fuck off?

    1. Could you translate that sentence into English?

  7. Satan says:

I am very concerned by the Fossil Free Books people as I have several books about fossils.

    1. Steve says:
