Douglas Murray, the Summer of Hate and the Victimhood Olympics
It’s not the done thing to talk about England’s lurch to the far-right, but nobody can ignore the spasm of fascism that is now as much a part of summertime as Wimbledon or the Notting Hill Carnival. Each summer, as the mercury rises and the Carling goes down, a fusion of Islamophobia, misogyny and xenophobia is carefully nurtured by the tabloid press and the far-right broadcast media which spews out hatred in all directions.
Some of it is just pathetic/hilarious, like the splutterings of Isabel Oakeshott, or the ‘Brits’ who fled to Benidorm who complain about ‘too many foreigners in UK’, or, across the pond, Donald complaining that the Smithsonian Institute is discussing ‘how bad slavery was’.
But the reality isn’t funny at all, and who knows where this ends.

The latest manifestation of this bile is the misnamed ‘Flag Force UK’, which poses as a spontaneous grassroots uprising of patriotism. In fact, according to Hope Not Hate [‘Operation Raise the Colours’ Organised by Well-Known Far-Right Extremists‘]:
“HOPE not Hate can reveal that the co-founder and organiser of the group is longtime Stephen Lennon (AKA Tommy Robinson) ally Andrew Currien (AKA Andy Saxon). Formerly a key member of the English Defence League’s leadership bodyguard team, and now running security for the far-right party Britain First, Currien has previously been jailed for his part in a racist death. He was one of six men convicted in 2009 after a 59-year-old man was crushed to death by a car following a violent brawl.”
This is the movement that wannabe Tory leader Robert Jenrick is aligning himself with, in a desperate attempt to outflank his beleaguered leader on the right. Jenrick posted this in support of the campaign: “Raise The Colours! While Britain-hating councils take down our own flags, we raise them up. We must be one country, under the Union Flag.”

This was the man who famously argued that ‘we’ should display the Star of David at the UK Border to show our support for Israel.

The support for Israel is an important element of the new fascist movement, confusing for some for whom anti-semitism has always been part of their ideology, but it gives a bloodlust to those who yearn for violence and embrace genocide and forced starvation. For many of these flag-loving patriots, their Islamophobia has trumped their antisemitism.
There is confusion too, about which flag and which country we should be celebrating. Jenrick is super clear: “We must be one country, under the Union Flag.” But this group, ‘Flag Force UK’ has a figure with a Union Jack, but their main banner image is a St George’s Cross.

Some of the coverage compounds the confusion. Sean O Grady, writing for the Independent [Raising flags only divides communities – just ask Northern Ireland] explains: “Britain seems to have gone a bit flag crazy lately – and not, I hasten to add, because the Lionesses won the Euros trophy twice in a row.”
There’s a lot to unpack there Sean.
Into this unholy mix comes a large dose of rhetoric about the ‘protection of women’, a regular fascist trope combining machismo with strong-man politics. As Doc Russ Jackson has pointed out, these are often astroturf groups backed by dark money: “The ‘Women’s Safety Initiative’ is an anti-migrant AstroTurf disinformation group founded by Jess Gill, a Fellow of the Koch-funded climate change denial group, the Foundation for Economic Education, & an apprentice at the Mises Institute.”
The Koch brothers fund a slew of far-right groups in Britain, including Spiked! magazine. Speaking of Britain’s finest libertarians, they have of course weighed in, alongside Free Speech Expert Toby Young, in favour of the delightful Lucy Connolly, the new heroine of the English patriots. Connolly, we might need to be reminded, called for hotels housing women and children to be set on fire.

It’s into this fascist moshpit that Douglas Murray strides, with his usual panache, publishing a tirade against Sally Rooney for having the temerity to use her voice to call out human rights violations and pledge to donate her earnings from her books to support Palestine Action. Writing in the Irish Times over the weekend, Ms Rooney said she will use the proceeds of her work and her public platform to continue her support for Palestine Action and “direct action against genocide in whatever way I can”.
This was like a red rag to a (John) Bull.
The immediate response was a flurry of ‘burn the witch’ style editorials and columns with calls for her to be arrested, banned and generally vilified. That was until it was pointed out that Sally Rooney is Irish. She lives in Ireland. Britain has no jurisdiction over her. It was probably at this point that Murray typed out his splenetic rage on his poor keyboard, declaring: “Nobody ever beat the Irish in the victimhood Olympics.”

Murray intones: “You see similar strains of aspiring victimhood in other mini-nationalisms. Over recent years, Scots and Welsh Nats have all sought to join in the victimhood jamboree.”
But if Murray’s narrative is loathsome and predictable, it is at least instructive. He writes: “In recent years, no group has been a better candidate for adoption by the Irish than the Palestinian people. It can be seen in the proliferation of Palestinian politics in Irish politics and the singling out of the state of Israel for unusual vilification. It can be seen in the Irish government’s planned anti-Israel legislation and in its other curious efforts to interpose themselves into the centre of a conflict in which they have absolutely no role.”
By now bristling with resentment, Murray concludes: “Although she seems to hear the jackboots of the Stasi British police at her door, Rooney is of course Irish, and appears to live in Ireland. And so wittingly or otherwise she joins a long list of Irish public figures willing to throw themselves into the middle of a row – any row – so long as it allows them the warm, fuzzy feeling of continuing to be part of the most oppressed people ever.”
Murray’s hatred of the Palestinians is neatly matched by his hatred of the Irish, but his dawning realisation that there is nothing to be done about Rooney is a wonder. You have to love the plaintive realisation: “Rooney is of course Irish, and appears to live in Ireland.”
But what is most fantastic about Murray’s tirade is not how it elevates the Summer of Hate above the low-brow Sun and Mail and GB News into the sophisticated pages of The Spectator, but how wonderfully unreflective it all is. The Victimhood Olympics? What on earth is this post-Brexit hellhole but the epitome of victimhood in which poor old Blighty is prevented from its date with destiny, its moment to be ‘Unleashed’ (again) by, I don’t know: the lack of flags, the bloody Irish, the recalcitrant Jocks, people who oppose genocide, ‘lefty lawyers’, the EU? Give yourselves a gold medal.

Some people do buy into these frothing claims to rectitude & righteousness – disturbing.
Well that told the odious Douglas Murray ! I feel like going out this weekend to buy a Sally Rooney book ! Added to that I might just see if I can find a copy of the Irish Times.
I came back from perhaps my best holiday ever in 2023 where I escaped the stupid coronation of King Chick and his Queenie declaring Ireland to be the friendliest, kindest country . For a time I seriously discussed moving there permanently so much did I love it. I will say one thing for the Irish ….. they can laugh at themselves and have real spunk! Fintan O Toole Mary Robinson Michael Higgins and Sally Rooney and the list goes on.
”Victimhood Olympics ” – well , no one can challenge England’s Little Englanders for the Gold Medal position in this event . They have been putting in Gold Medal performances for some years now and I am confident that Douglas Murray will be full of praise for their dedication to surpass all previous expectations now that the Lefties in the EU can no longer hold back their potential .
If people are unhappy about asylum seekers (ie refugees) being housed in hotels in their vicinity they can write to MP or councillor. If they feel they want to protest they should protest outside Westminster, local council or local MP’s office. To protest outside the premises where people (including women & children) who have been traumatised in their original country and/or by the journey is cruel and inhumane. I am afraid for many of the protesters the inhumanity and cruelty is why they are there.
The right wing media and politicians are stirring up hatred and much of broadcast media and government are legitimising it.
The UK has been going down a rabbit hole since Brexit and it is getting darker. This will not end well.
It’s very strange as marches require police/council permission- nobody should permit this
There are plenty of examples where marches etc are not allowed to go past potential victims eg Orange Lodge marches and Catholic Churches, Pro Palestinian marches and synagogues etc. It beggars belief that after the violence of last summer aimed at refugees in hotels that exclusion zones have not been enforced around hotels containing refugees.
Former “Hate not Hate” CEO Nick Lowles put out posts giving Hoax information saying Far-right protesters were gathering around a number of Migrant hotels, bring out the Socialist Workers Party (aka Stand Up To Racism), and Antifa. They were remarkably organized, well equipped, with Starmer praising them.
Lowles then went on to post that “Right Wing protesters had thrown acid in an Asian woman’s face”. Again completely untrue. Then Pakistani Muslim mobs went on the streets with weapons looking for white men to beat up.
The Police didn’t even arrest them, but politely asked them to deposit their knives at their Mosque.
The Police didn’t even question Lowles. Let alone give him the same treatment as they did the Lucy Connelly or Peter Taylor (the harmless grandfather who died in Prison).
Hate not Hope are a charity and a Limited Company, and have connections to the Labour party.
Doesn’t it all stink a bit.
Is this what it means to be left-wing? Hardly noble and righteous is it?
You are contravening the 9th Commandment, Stevie boy. Stop telling fibs.
Frank – Stevie H’s priceless comment with its whining sense of victim hood completely demonstrates everything that Mike has written.
Indeed.
Be charitable, Murray is a few sandwiches short of a picnic.
We need to get beyond the idea that this is “England’s” summer of hate.
The last three Saturdays there have been mobs screaming abuse at refugee hotels in Aberdeen. They will be out again today in Westhill. There have been other rabid mobs in Perth, Falkirk, Peterhead and more. This is no longer, if it ever was, and English issue.
This morning there are flags (Saltires) tied to lampposts for a mile along Great Northern road Aberdeen, from the Haudagain roundabout to the new Denis Law mural. And no, these were not put up by pro indy folk, but by “Aberdeen against Illegal Immigration.”
I have photos, I’ll send them to you Mike.
Oh, and while I’m here, I am so very, very tired of liberals saying we need to ignore these vile fascists in our communities in some sort of vain hope that it will go away. It won’t. If there was ever a time when ignoring them would work, it’s past. We need to be out opposing these outpourings of hate, and making it clear that refugees are welcome here.
I’m aware Doug, I have someone covering the scene separately.
Maybe SteveH could give info on when the Hotel Shoutin’ n’ Flag events are happening? What pubs people are meeting in for pre-racism drinky-poos? That kind of thing.
You’re right, they ain’t going to just go away. They are being financed by people with no care of what happens to Britain. The only way they are going to shut up is if they are continually confronted on the streets just as the NF were in the late 70’s, early 80’s. They are a minority but you would not think so due to the amplification given to their activities. I’d help deal with them but I’m almost 70 and don’t live in the UK. Anyone who does not think that this business needs dealing with soon has their head in the sand.

I must agree with Douglas Murray. I had read his full article and despite being Irish I fully agreed with his conclusions. The current situation across the island of Ireland and particularly in the north is ridiculous. Palestinian and more recently Iranian flags fly across republican areas and in retaliation Israeli flags fly in loyalist neighbourhoods. There’s a wilful desire by many in my own Catholic community to adopt the Palestinian plight as their own and to ignore the human rights abuses perpetuated by Hamas and the Iranian regime against its own people, let alone against the Jewish population. It is shameful and unfortunately many in my community seem to enjoy the victimhood status and the self-righteous posturing.
Do you really think opposing genocide is ‘self-righteous posturing’, Carmel? Do you think Hamas’ ‘human rights abuses’ justify Israel’s murder of around 20,000 innocent children so far? Whose side do you think Jesus would be on, if he were here today?
Carmel – I don’t approve of Hamas actions of October 7th, have no truck with Iranian regime but I firmly oppose the genocide, starvation and ethic cleansing being imposed by Israel on the Palestinian people. This is not antisemitism it is making a stand based on humanity.
Douglas Murray and other apologists for Israel’s government expose themselves as zealots with little humanity and absolutely no empathy for innocent civilians having inhumane suffering imposed on them in the name of revenge by Israel, facilitated by the USA and complicit governments in UK, France and Germany.
If more countries followed example of Irish government perhaps less children would be getting murdered and starved in Gaza and the remaining hostages would have a better chance of being released.
Well said John
And yet it’s Douglas Murray and his ilk who are the biggest victims of all.
Their whole race, culture, way of life and ALL-THINGS-BRITTISH are about to be eradicated and replaced!*. Poor wee lambs. Nae wonder he’s frothing.
*Weirdly, the KKK took to the streets of small-town, Southern USA, seventy years ago, to warn us of the same forthcoming victimhood. They should have just chilled TF out. Generations later, it turns out fat, white men are still running things. Phew!
One set of victims are being burned alive. The other is sipping iced drinks by the pool. I know who’s side I’m on.
Apologies ( to SteveH & sensitive others) for my “hate speech”. That ^ should read; “old, fat white men are still running things.”
It would be interesting to hear people’s opinions on what actions should have been taken in response to Hamas invading Israel and conducting a mini-genocide. Apart from calling them very naughty boys.
The response ? Obviously not go on a genocide !
One possible response would be to ask the question; “What can have happened to these people that they have become so angry, murderous and full of hatred for our country?”
Followed by: “What steps could we take to reduce this hatred and make sure our two nations can live side by side in the future without danger?”
An appeal to the international community to condemn the actions of Hamas, issue sanctions, apprehend the murderers, conduct independent mediation, serve justice?
What about you M. Mouse? You got any ideas other than “Bomb and starve every last one of them inclusing children, steal their land, raze every building and wipe them from the face of the earth” ? Let’s hear your ideas.
Mouse – there were any number of ways in which Israel could have worked with the international community (including some of its Arab neighbours) to bring the perpetrators of October 7th atrocities to justice. This approach could also have helped them to obtain release of hostages. Instead the Israeli government chose the path of revenge which has:
1)Left at least 60,000 dead including many thousands of women and children.
2)Maimed about 100,000 again many women and children.
3)Implemented a policy of forced starvation on a population of 2 million people.
4)Levelled to rubble vast swathes of the country.
5)Forced multiple evacuations of civilians into camps from their homes.
6)Failed to comply with peace agreements which would have led to return of more hostages.
7)Ruined Israel’s reputation as a nation on international stage.
Why? – primarily to keep Netanyahu in power (backed by extreme nationalist allies) and to avoid scrutiny on how and why the October 7th attack was not prevented by IDF and to keep Netanyahu out of jail.
