Sarwar’s Gamble

Sarwar’s campaign was a shambles [Scottish Labour’s Holyrood Disaster], and he was sensing that the Starmer-Mandelson-McSweeney omnishambles was dragging him down. No doubt it was, but it’s a diversion from Scottish Labour’s own problems. His press conference this afternoon was high drama, and was aimed at framing him as bold, brave and decisive, not traits commonly associated with him. But only a couple of hours after his live televised call for the Prime Minister to step down, it looks to be backfiring terribly on the Scottish Labour leader.
Aubrey Allegratti from The Times, which has been running a running commentary on the SLP’s civil war since the Autumn, asks:
“Will ANY Scottish MPs come out and support Anas Sarwar? So far there’s been a big backlash against Sarwar. One senior figure says privately: “Anas is wrong. [It’s] opportunistic and with no plan.” Another Scottish Labour source adds: “Anas does not have authority to speak on behalf of the Scottish party in this way. It’s a fucking shitshow.” A third says: “Is this really going to help Anas’ chances of winning that much? It’s rearranging the cushions in a burning house.”

Connor Gillies, the SKY News Scotland Correspondent, tweeted saying: “Very senior Scottish Labour source tells me this move by Sarwar is “idiocy, immature, incoherent and self-defeating. Bad for the country, playing into our opponents’ hands, and without any idea of an end game.”
In the past hour, since the press conference, sixteen Cabinet ministers have tweeted public support for the PM Rachel Reeves David Lammy Yvette Cooper Pat McFadden Darren Jones John Healey Bridget Philipson Steve Reed P Kyle Ed Miliband H Alexander H Benn D Alexander J Stevens E Reynolds J Reynolds. As I go to publish it seems the entire Cabinet has swung behind the Prime Minister.
They may not be very enthusiastic, and they may not really believe it, but they also want to avoid a bloodbath.
Ian Murray MP, who many felt was behind much of the plotting against Starmer in recent months said: “The last thing we need is more chaos when the public want a govt on their side tackling the cost of living. We inherited a badly failing economy & public services. That takes time to turn around & Keir deserves that time. I’m sorry & deeply disappointed that Anas is wrong here.”
Murray’s replacement, Douglas Alexander issued a statement saying:
Quite how Douglas Alexander remains as co-leader of Sarwar’s campaign in these circumstances is not clear.
Anas Sarwar is badly exposed and appears to have completely misjudged the moment. His entire speech was couched as him versus John Swinney, Anas Sarwar versus the SNP. The number of times Sarwar repeated the phrase: “My country, Scotland” was notable, if a little strange. His campaign team have ditched Labour logos for a very large saltire, which was on display today.
But, if we’ve got this right, Sarwar has gone on live tv in the middle of an election campaign to call on his Prime Minster’s resignation without either a plan for what or who comes next, and without sizing up the support from his own colleagues.
Unless something dramatic changes in the next few days, it seems that Anas Sarwar has gambled everything in the most astonishing act of political misjudgment possible. It may be that it is he and not Keir Starmer who will have to resign.

I find it interesting how many pundits make out that were it not for UK Labour, the branch in Scotland would be doing swimmingly. I think Saawaa et al would be a bit higher up the polls than they are at the moment but not much had Staamaa just been muddling along in the usual incoherent way.
It’s also interesting how lots of commentators (for ex. one on Radio Scotland around 1615 today) feel compelled to gush about how bad they feel personally for the ‘decent, honest, upright’ Staamaa before laying on the criticism. Is this the same guy that literally trousered all those freebies from some (now forgotten) rich donor?
All that said, Saawaa is going to have to sound retreat big-time soon. He will be crucified by London.
Surely this day , when Scottish Labour declare that Westminster doesn’t work for Scotland ( with Labour in power!) ,is the time to seize the moment!
Time for all who want to play a part in enabling an even better Scotland( by inspiring our fellow citizens to choose Independence ) to give unequivocal full support to the SNP .
The SNP is the vehicle for change . The argument against Westminster is won and we now need to turbo charge the SNP with members , funds, activists, positive coverage and new energy to clearly articulate the systematic policy and budgetary changes possible in an Independent Scotland .
Supporting the SNP to communicate the positive alternative can be the tipping point to starting on the path to real change for the better for the many people of Scotland.
Not a chance. All rowing in behind Staamaa ‘good and decent man’ to quote Welsh secretary on R$ just now
Brian Leishman has also called for Starmer to resign but unlike Sarwar he has a track record of criticising Starmer and his policies. Sarwar has always agreed with Starmer and stood shoulder to shoulder with him and was appointed by him. (he also never criticised Mandelson’s appointment as Ambassador and indeed he described him as ‘his old friend’ last year.
Sarwar’s address today smacks of being not only opportunistic but also of him kicking a friend and colleague when he is down for his own personal advantage. This type of behaviour doesn’t not surprisingly go down well with the public. Many people were not impressed with Ed Milliband seeming to stab his brother in the back in 2010 Labour leadership election.
Sarwar was unable to provide any support for or even name a potential successor which again makes him look opportunistic.
Starmer will resign in medium term but Sarwar’s clumsy intervention has probably helped keep him in place in short term.
Lastly Sarwar’s intervention was counterintuitive as he said he wanted to concentrate on Holyrood issues but he is making a high level intervention and highlighting a Westminster issue.
Spot on, Mike. Sarwar cuts a very lonely figure tonight.
Looks suspiciously favourable, maybe, for both Sarwar and Starmer. Sarwar gets to be the independent Scot after being the victim of Starmer’s bungling and Starmer gets the Labour Party’s sympathy vote. Maybe it was McSweeney’s last ploy before he left.
Anas Sarwar spent so much of his speech talking about importance of Scotland and the need to divorce the political needs of Scotland from Westminster I wondered whether he was going to announce he was in favour of independence. That is where logic of his speech was leading him!
He, personally, is a bigger asset as the opposition.
Very true – maybe he is a closet independence supporter working as a 5th columnist within Labour to destroy it?
He certainly made the case for Scottish Labour to be a separate organisation from UK Labour though I severely doubt that realisation even dawned upon his fevered mind.
Exactly , John!
Exactly , John
In the media scrum after FMQ’s last Thursday, Sarwar was asked “Will Starmer will last until May ?” Answer: “Yes, but we need full transparency and answers” [ https://x.com/TartanSeer/status/2019423080796549536/video/1 ] Between Thursday and today there was a weekend of campaign activity, and its apparent from social media that Scottish Labour were facing a tsunami of disapproval from people about Mandelson and Starmer. By Sunday night they were in panic mode and Sarwar decided not to wait for “full transparency and answers” and instead jumped the shark today. As he has found out, he is not regarded by UK Labour as a significant enough politician to tear down Starmer, and if anything, it has led to a consolidation of cabinet ministers supporting him today. Who knows if that lasts, but right now Sarwar has shipwrecked himself. Of course there is plenty Scottish Labour friendly media spin out there acclaiming his bravery and his independence, but this planned breach was already in the public domain as recently as last September. [“Starmer’s Scotland problem: Why Sarwar is preparing to break with No. 10” https://archive.is/ADrTI ]. Mandelson just precipitated the timing, that’s all. A miserable weekend on the doors made the prospect of 3rd place in May very real to Sarwar. So its all blind panic and self-preservation. Maybe something else comes out, maybe a cabinet member still flips, but if Starmer gets through the week then Sarwar confirms his status as the talentless no-mark Scottish Labour leader we know him to be.
What a pathetic craven chanty rassler sarwar is,having the audacity to attempt to wrap himself in the Saltire all the while stabbing his boss in the back, he really is a cretinous poltroon of a man,a fantastic gift to the cause of an independent Scotland, roll on the May elections and this clown can be consigned to the electoral oblivion he so richly deserves or will it be the usual set up given a pass to the house of lords for failed labour has beens.perhaps NOT from his old boss, buy the popcorn and sit back and enjoy the pantomine
Sarwar, condemning Starmer for exactly the same error of judgement Starmer made regards Mandelson, that he himself Sarwar made regards his former education spokesperson, still in Labour and still and MSP.
They also have a common denominator in the No 10 communication advisor who was elevated to the house of lords.
There are many many decent labour folk in Scotland, but the labour leadership in Scotland and uk stinks, if anything worse than the tories!
I think Sarwar’s repeated use of the phrase ‘my country, Scotland’ would be very irritating to Labour in London. Of course it echoes Starmer’s use of similar phrasing reminding everyone his country is England.
Westminster cannot stand foreign interference from the Celtic fringes so naturally would isolate the pretend FM in waiting.
Keir Starmer hasn’t directly addressed Sarwar’s comments but will frame it as gross disloyalty to a political colleague. All part of the Labour party as victims narrative!
As far as Holyrood election is concerned the PM has already been told by Sarwar to save the air miles and stay in the south.
Expect we’ll see more back flips than an Olympic freestyle skier in the next few days.
David – I reckon Sarwar repeatedly say ‘Scotland’s my country’ would grate with a lot of people in Scotland if you examine his record!
It’s a long shot I know, but what if Anas Sarwar knew exactly what he was doing?
What if he is gambling on one win, or another win:
– either he ousts Starmer and looks strong (clearly that gamble has failed)
– or he gets sacked from being Scottish Labour leader and so isn’t blamed for their looming electoral disaster?
The trouble is both have failed. He’s now tied to a failing leader which he has denounced. Its the worst of all worlds (for both of them)
True.
How weird that not being sacked doubles his failure
Did Sarwar line up heavyweight supporters who let him down when Starmtroopers got heavy?
Or did he somehow think that him with two MPs could topple Starmer?
Or was the whole thing just a publicity stunt?
