Dr Gemma Smith is an itinerant writer, researcher and hospitality minion, who currently lives between the Scottish Highlands and Morocco. She specialises in Gaelic place-names, ecological history and critical theory, with a particular emphasis on decolonial and indigenous methodologies. Her recent PhD project took five case study landscape areas in Assynt, Coigach and Eddrachillis now classed as ‘wild land’, and used place-names and other sources to map how they were inhabited and utilised by humans and animals prior to Clearance and ‘Improvement’.
