Guest Editor Opportunity

We’re excited to announce the return of our Guest Editor position over the next few months.  The idea is to make way for some fresh commissioning, to create different networks and unearth new writers and contacts. We also want to to begin to address issues of diversity and equality in Scottish media; and to give space to focus on some other projects we’re working on.

We give control of Bella over for a few days and give a small commissioning budget to the guest editor. Send your ideas for what you would do with the time and why we should give Bella over to you.

Please send (one one page of A4) your ideas outlining:

1) What sort of ideas you have about the opportunity – what sort of issues you want to approach.
2) Why you see this as an important or useful opportunity.
3) What you see as the role of Bella.
3) How you see the media landscape in Scotland.

You can commission work in text, audio or video.
Individual or groups can apply.
Proposals should be sent to us by Friday 18 January.

  1. Elaine Fraser says:

Despite the name Bella tends to have predominantly male writers and the comments section is also usually male dominated. Over 50 percent of the population are women. I believe Lesley Riddoch once turned the ‘Scotsman’ into the ‘Scotswoman’.

    1. Very true Elaine (that’s the point of the project?)

Last year Kirsty Strickland, Nadine McBay and Laura Waddell all took part in the initiative.

Last year? And the year before, and the year before that. Despite the apologies about the under-representation of women and writers from other groups AND promises to do better this year, I bet Bella will still be a Dudebros collective with a token female next year as well.

I vote for Angela Haggerty as football editor.

  3. Lucy says:

It’s the sort of thing I’d love to be involved in, but as a full-time unpaid carer (and former newspaper sub-editor, web editor and freelance editorial person), I just don’t have the time or ability to be reliable enough with my caring duties coming first. Frustrating, as I’m sure the carer perspective would be interesting. There are a lot of us about and we have many live issues. Not sure what more to say about it, but it’s an idea for some content in the future. I know a fair few amazing folk (mostly women) slogging their guts out, often unnoticed.
